Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital (Ortopedska bolnišnica Valdoltra) in Ankaran is Slovenia's leading centre for orthopaedic surgery and the main organiser of SKAA. Set in a seaside park on the Slovenian coast, a few kilometres from Koper and the Italian border, it is a national reference institution for hip and knee arthroplasty, arthroscopic and sports surgery of the shoulder and knee, spine surgery and paediatric orthopaedics, with modern operating theatres, advanced imaging and one of the highest surgical volumes in the country.
Founded in 1909 as a sanatorium for bone tuberculosis in the Austro-Hungarian era, the hospital was renovated by the American Red Cross after the First World War, taken over by the Italian Red Cross in 1920 and, after the Second World War, became part of the Yugoslav health system with a growing focus on orthopaedics. It has carried the name Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital since 1961.
Its surgeons, physiotherapists and researchers form the core of the SKAA faculty and bring the clinical cases that are discussed at the symposium.
